a taca airline flight from san salvador to tegucigalpa skidded off the runway on june 1 injuring 65 and killing 5. the president of honduras decided to close the airport indefinitely. that is, closing the country's capital city international airport. there is nobody that is happy about this decision. the other airport in honduras (san pedro) is 5 hours away from tegucigalpa, the road is very small and has become very dangerous with more travellers to and from.
we were scheduled to leave for honduras tomorrow, but after careful thought with gustavo's family we decided it would be too dangerous to fly to san pedro and make the drive in a rent car where an increase of car ambushes has taken place.
we have not seen gustavo's family in 2.5 years. his family has never met stella. this is the first year that sofia would have enjoyed beyond words her cousins. this is sad on many levels, and we just hope that the airport will reopen before the president's term is up (two more years).
in light of this, david and jana invited us to houston. they hooked us up with a babysitter, and we're going to a willie nelson concert all day saturday. i've never seen him in concert and assume beer will be flowing down with ease....

hey d,
sorry you can't get to honduras. i know how sad it can be when family is so far away and you just want to see them and be with them. i hope the situation there clears up soon. very soon.
i also hope you enjoy willy nelson this weekend - that should be a great time! enjoy it and best happy 4th wishes to you guys.
oh d - i am devastated for you all! especially gustavo! what a tragic turn of events. i don't even know what to say.
i am really glad that you will be spending the 4th with david & jana. willie nelson will make you forget this...even for a day.
love you -b
Well that makes me so sad! I didn't know about the car ambushes. Scary! I hope they open the airport soon.
However, um Houston?! Would love to meet Stella and Sofia! Give us a call if you have time to play!Leslie and I live right by Lara's!
Beer makes everything better!
These things usually do not last long. No matter how muffled the voice initially, the collective always finds a bullhorn. People will not tolerate the airport being closed for too long. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you all.
