THE BLUE PLANETa natural history of the oceans
you've probably heard about this tour or seen the BBC series. we went to the meyerson last night to see the blue planet LIVE!, and it was amazing!the real challenge of wildlife film-making is to try to give our audience a sense of the wonderful experiences we have on location. pictures alone cannot convey the scale of the experience, but probably the most powerful emotional tool of all is music. each of the oceans' habitats is completely different, and george fenton created completely different score to capture their individual moods.

there was a massive screen, and the dallas symphony played live with george fenton conducting. it started with the blue whale....tears dropped from my face immediately. it's true, music is such an emotional tool! all that was missing were the smells of the ocean.
77,000 hours of film were cut and edited. all of the music was scored by george fenton, except for one number - la mer by charles trenet. the screen showed all inhabitants and eco-systems of the oceans from penguins, polar bears, sea gulls, whales, dolphins, reefs, sea turtles, sharks, seals, the sulfide deposits at the sea bed (which throws common sense right out the window).
the boundaries between cinema and television are becoming progressively blurred. most films are made with the television in mind, while at the same time, more and more people are able to enjoy television on high-quality screens and with stereo sound to rival the cinema. the true difference now lies in where and with whom you watch.
this show is also about being part of a theatrical experience, which involves sharing these incredible images of incredible creatures in a way that we can't in front of the television.
the makers of the blue planet are only too aware threat the oceans and their inhabitants are increasingly under threat. attempting to understand and protect them is perhaps the ultimate aim begin these remarkable films. by joining us here in the celebration, you are vitally endorsing the sentiment.

should this tour come to a venue near you, i highly recommend going. and, take your older kids. (we did not take sofia, but she would have loved it.)

WOW! That sounds fantastic, d. So glad you got to go and I will def. keep an eye out for it up here in Boston. Hopefully, I haven't missed out on it.
Very cool! How many is that off your list and when is your birthday? Everytime you mark one off, I am reminded that I have only knocked 2 off mine and one doesn't really even count because it was to make the list. Guess I'd better get moving.
