yes. not one alone but a combination of them can replace oil.

i agree with the author that one of the country's biggest strengths may also be a weakness. the US is highly integrated, business is tied to air travel, technology requires constant energy, you don't have to build it before people will come - roads and homes will be built, food will be available. all of this is possible because there is energy and sufficient demand to meet all of those requirements. the US has never had to worry about this before since in their projections is such that oil will not run out for a long time. i have been reading articles about running out of oil or needing alternative sources for more than 30 years. what wasn't factored into the projections was countries like china, brazil, and india experiencing rapid growth, therefore all projections are now off the table.
Being in the finance industry, do you believe that there will be no more financing available for oil exploration companies?
it is too harsh to say that no financing will be available. what will happen is that the market will correct itself and only make funds available to companies that can meet the higher standards. (ie - companies with a higher probability of success and a higher internal rate of return)

no. it is the land of opportunity. if you work hard enough, you can get your wish. there is no free lunch.
being from honduras, where agriculture is the center of economic life. do you think reverting back to an agriculturally based economy is a solution?
no. as an economist, i believe in the benefits of specialization. to that point, you can see several niche markets popping up such as organic foods and hybrid vehicles. the US ia a big producer of innovation, and i have a lot of confidence that its drive for success will help find a way to replace oil.
should the government start investing more on passenger railroads?
amtrak receives very generous subsidies to operate today. additional rails will not be built until the market demands it.

mccain. he is not trying to use government to manipulate/control market forces, but instead he will use government to set parameters in which the market forces can operate.

okay - i love this...good stuff. and I like the Opinion article. And I can just see Gustavo sitting in the front of the stage, audience level, answering those questions from J. Lipton! Does that mean he'll field questions now? :)
This is a brilliant idea and Gustavo sounds equally brilliant, hardworking and kind!!! I can tell that Rob and Gustavo would get along famously.
