it started out rocky...after all, sofia did start her first day of a 5 day a week school year, the same week she had her 4th birthday, her mother went to the hospital, and she became a big sister. that was a rough 2 weeks!!! she persevered though, slowly but surely!
first/second quarter comments from her teacher:
sofia is a lovely young girl. she is cooperative and is easily directed. sofia loses concentration easily. sofia rarely communicates to teacher or classmates during school.
third quarter comments from her teacher:
sofia is a cooperative young girl. she is speaking more in class to her teacher and friends. she enjoys art and handwriting. she often forgets 3-4 step directions during art but is redirected easily.
okay. so at least she is speaking (and still cooperative)!
fourth quarter comments from her teacher:
sofia is a cooperative young girl. she has made great improvements through the year. her parents have decided to place her in the full day preschool for the 2008-09 school year. i have enjoyed sofia this year!
she's made improvements (and she's still cooperative).
so here's the real deal. we struggled with this decision! do we send sofia to kindergarten or do we repeat pre k 4??? we decided to repeat pre k 4 for several reasons:
- she's young. her birthday is august 26, she would have always been the youngest. stella's birthday is september 4. she will always be the oldest. we thought it would be best if they were both some of the oldest in their class.
- she's small, as seen below. most of the girls in her preschool class turned 5 in october, she had just turned 4.

- we think that repeating pre k 4 with give her an opportunity to lead and build confidence.
- the most important determining factor for me: when she is a freshman in high school she will have the confidence and the maturity to stand up for herself and not cave to peer pressure. wishful thinking? maybe. but it is something i desperately wish i would have had!

she'll be attending another campus going to the pre k 4 five day full day program (which is also where kinder-2nd grade is) vs the 5 day half day program she just completed. kindergarten is all the buzz for sofia and her friends, so we've told her you have to be 5 before you can go to kindergarten. cop out? well it's not a lie, school starts august 25, and she turns 5 august 26. she accepted that explanation but had one major concern....."do i get to wear uniforms?" YES YOU DO! we are all happy about that for the upcoming school year!!!

I am so proud of my baby. Not only did she have to deal with all of that but she also got her 4 yr old shots the day after her sister was born. She handled it all very well though.
D&G-As you might know, we struggled with this decision with Ryan as well. His Birthday is Sept. 10. We ultimately decided to hold him one more year for ALL the SAME reasons you listed. We feel confident in the choice we made. Hope you do to. AND, we gave him the same reason (have to be 5)for not advancing to K. He said, "Oh, okay."
sofia is a wonderful kid. i cannot imagine that with denise & gustavo as parents that she will ever be anything but confident, outgoing, kind, smart and beautiful. she is all of those things all ready...i see only more ahead.
you guys are very lucky and i am so glad to see you raising this girl into a woman that we will all be proud of. congrats sofia on finishing pre-school!
and, by the way, denise, you are such a thoughtful and insightful mother. you have made the right decision about school next year.
i hope that i will be as thoughtful with wil as you are with the girls. you are a wonderful mom and a daily inspiration to me. i love ya.
you should be SO PLEASED with the comments. you should see henry's comments - oy vey! he's the youngest in his class and started kindergarten as the youngest in his school - birthday 8/30. it was rough, so go with your gut, girlie. she'll be fine.
I was always the youngest - in home AND at school (august birthday too)...sofia is a wonderful, beautiful girl - i love that she loves art!
i agree with emily, your gut is the greatest guide - i think i've told betsy that a million times! :)
She looks so grown up in her uniform- I think I'm going to cry! She did go through lots of changes this year- man, it's hard to grow up!
